About COSMOS: The Consortium of Organizations for Strong-Motion
Observation Systems
A public-interest nonprofit corporation for
earthquake safety
Mission:
To expand and modernize significantly the acquisition and
application of strong-motion data in order to increase public
safety from earthquakes.
One of the major objectives
of COSMOS is to promote the
advancement of strong-motion measurement in densely urbanized areas and
other locations of special significance to a society likely to be struck by
future earthquakes.
Membership in COSMOS is open to
all agencies, organizations, private companies and consultants, professional
institutions, professional societies, and universities.
COSMOS has been established under the
guidance of the Committee for the Advancement of Strong Motion Programs
(CASMP; C. Stepp, chairman) with the support of the National Science
Foundation and charter endorsement
by the California Division of Mines and
Geology, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
